The Detection
The story of the crash of "Gelbe 13" at Kalken/Laarne was first published in 1995 in the book "'40-'45 boven Schelde, Dender en Durme" (Cynrik De Decker & Jean-Louis Roba, De Krijger publications). Their findings were based on documents found in Bundesarchiv Freiburg and the National Archives (Washington DC).
After interviewing several elderly people in their village of Kalken, local enthousiasts Pieter Janssens and Roland De Bock were finally led to some fields along the Dienstweg. With his metal detector Pieter found several smaller pieces, scattered arround over a large area. Pieter had no problem convincing owner of the land Marc Bollaert to start up a fascinating project. After Pieter informed the Archaeology Team of the Belgian Aviation History Association, detection specalist Dany Saey found a large spot which seemed to show a concentration of hidden metal. One question remained before starting the process of an archaeological investigation: where there any large iron parts (engine, weapons) and if so, at which depth. A geophysic survey might give an answer. With magnetometers, specialist Michel van Orden of Bom-Be made an analysis and pointed out two large iron objects at a depth of about 3 meters... |
